The Sahastra Tal trek is a journey through the beautiful sceneries of the Himalayas. The Khatling glacier is in the north of this lake and the Gangotri glacier is in the extreme north. The Bhagirathi River streams flow on the northwest of the Sahastra tal. Likewise, Bal Ganga flows in the northwest, and the Bhilangana in the southwest of the lake. Balganga River, which flows through the Jaraav Tal and Kamad village, meets with Dharam Ganga in Budha Kedar.

Sahastra Tal, being a blissful lake, is often linked with many mystical stories. It is generally contemplated as dev tal or Gandhara tal. It is called the Lake of Gods by trekkers. It is dedicated to lord Vishnu incredibly.

You can see your reflection in the pure and transparent water of Sahastra Tal. It is also known as darshan tal. Brahma kamal is grown on the bank of ta so people can pluck it and offer it to god. Visitors, while sitting on the bank, chant and recite religious prayers. The residents believe that the fairies and the Gandhara come to this lake stealthily, while some think and say that god comes here in the Brahma muhrat and carries out puja on the bank of the lake.

People often take a holy dip in the lake. This is a local pilgrimage sight for the people reciting nearby areas. They visit here with devotion on the occasion of Hindu festivals. In the bank of the Sahastra tal, the Pitra paksha and pind daan are done for the peace of ancestors’ souls by people. They have faith that there is a way to swag ahead of the lake.

Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Netala (Uttarkashi)

Drive Distance: 221 KM 

Drive Time: 8 – 9 hours 

On the first day of your period of traveling, you will arrive at Netala, which will be at least 8 to 9 hours of traveling. The total distance traveled on the first day of your journey will be 221 KM, and the route will cover Landour, Moriana Top, chinyalisour, and Uttarkashi. 

Day 2: Trek from Silla village to Gairi

Trek distance: 8 km 

Trek time: 5 hours

The starting point of the trek is Silla village. The Silla village is a one-hour drive from Netala. After passing the Bhagirathi River, which is on the route to Gangotri, you will arrive there, to be precise. Thereafter, we will move ahead on an inclined route of Gairi through a trek.

Gairi is only populated by the people of Silla. Throughout the trek, you will be able to explore the typical and traditional culture of the Garhwal region. You will be able to see how the people of the village live their lives and how they live and earn. You have to go across the dense forests of Kharsu, moru, thunder, kafal, Bhanjh, and Burans through the trail. 

You have to stay in Gairi for a night, and it will take 5 hours to reach Gairi, and it will be an 8 km distance journey. 

Day 3: Trek from Gairi to Kush Kalyan

Trek distance: 10 km 

Trek time: 6 – 7 hours

On the 3rd day, you have to trek towards the Chuli La Pass. You will feel quite challenged on this path because this route is covered with dense deciduous and oak forests, and this path will feel quite tricky. After that, the route will be less complicated because it will be less rough and more pleasant. After crossing a certain distance, you will feel that the trek is going downward, and after crossing the Bugyal, you have to hike again to the upward side to reach the peak of the Kush Kalyan Bugyal.

After reaching the top, you have to carry your camp, or the professional trekker you are going with has to take the camp. After setting up the camp, you will spend a night at Kush Kulyan Bugiyal, which is similar to Dayara and Ali Bedini Bugyal, and the field of alpine makes it a different destination of Uttarakhand. Many of the trekkers do not know about that field, which is why few people will be able to reach that location. There is a vast area for grazing where the people of Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes migrate with their cattle.

The local people built many small temples of local gods, and Bugyal was considered to be divine and spiritual. The total trek will take 6 to 7 hours to cover the 10 km distance.

Day 4:  Trek from Kush Kalyan to Kyarki

Trek Distance: 12 km

Trek Time: 6 – 7 hours

On the 4th day, you have to trek towards the Kyarki Bugyal. From the end of the Kush Kalyan Bugyal, you have to start your journey towards the Kyarki Bugyal, which will cover 12 km in 7 hours. The trek is quite steep, narrow, and rocky as well. The route is covered with significant ground of grasses, which are called meadows, which are spread across the surroundings of this trek. Kyarki Bugyal is unpopulated, as you see in Kush Kalyan Bugyal, which makes it more peaceful and beautiful.

It might not be as vast as Kush Kulyan Bugyal, but you will be able to see the beautiful view of many popular peaks like Srikanth, Kalanaag, Draupadi Ka Danda, and Bandarpoonch and that will be your following camping site.

Day 5: Trek from Kyarki to Lamb Tal

Trek Distance: 6 km 

Trek Time: 3 – 4 hours

On the 5th day, you will leave for the Lamb Tal, which will cover about 6 km in distance. You have to walk on narrow cliffs at the start to reach the Dharamshala campsite.

There will be no meadows after crossing the Dharamshala campsite, and the climb towards the Kokuli top will begin. You will be able to see the Khatling Glacier and the lakes, which are surrounded by the Lamb Tal when you reach the top. We will have to trek downwards to reach Lamb Tal. This route offers you the opportunity to see gorgeous flowers like Brahma Kamal, Neel Kamal, Phen Kamal, and other Himalayan flowers, and this will be your next campsite area. In the region, Sahastra Tal is bigger than Lamb Tal.

Day 6: Trek from Lamb Tal to Sahastra Tal and return back to Dharamshala

Trek Distance: 12 km

Trek Time: 8 – 9 hours

On the 6th day, you will start trekking toward the Sahastra Tal. This trek will be very challenging, but you can feel it more exciting. When you cross the Dhoni Tal, you will reach the Sahastra Tal. 

When you reach the Sahastra Tal, you have to take a bath in the holy water. It depends upon your choice, and spending time in the spiritual environment, you have to go back to the Dharamshala campsite. The total trek is approx 12 km, and it will take 8 to 9 hours to cover.

Day 7: Return trek from Dharamshala campsite to Kush Kalyan Bugyal

You have to stay in your camps at Kush Kalyan Bugyal after completing the 8-hour trek, which passes through the Kyarki Khal and Bugyal.

Day 8: Return trek from Kush Kalyan to Silla village to Netala

Trek Distance: 12 km

Trek Time: 8 hours

On the 8th day, you will leave for Silla village, which will cover the beautiful areas and local Bugyals, and you can also see the great Himalayan forests. After reaching Silla village, you have to go back to the hotel by vehicle or taxi, and you have to stay for one night in Netala.

Day 9: Returning back from Netala to Dehradun 

Drive Distance: 175 km

Drive Time: 8 – 9 hours

This will be the final day of your journey, and you will be returned to Dehradun in your vehicle or taxi. From Dehradun, you will return to your homes with the beautiful memories of Sahastra Tal Lake.
